Mexican protesters clash with police

OAXACA, Mexico, July 17 (UPI) -- Mexican protesters and police clashed in the southern city of Oaxaca as the demonstrators tried to reach a stadium hosting a festival.

Hundreds of leftist protesters threw rocks at police and set several vehicles on fire hoping to disrupt the international event, El Universal reported Tuesday. Police in turn fired tear gas on the protesters.

The protesters said Monday they wanted to hold their own version of the event. Last year, protests in Oaxaca prevented the festival from taking place.
