BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 17 (UPI) -- The Lebanese army moved closer Tuesday to routing al-Qaida linked militants from a deserted Palestinian refugee camp at Nahr al-Bared.
The military has laid siege to the camp since the fighters launched attacks on May 20 and has suffered 100 fatalities, including three soldiers killed Monday, the Alalam Satellite TV network reported Tuesday.
Monday, troops erected a Lebanese flag atop a strategic hill they captured, leaving an estimated 50-60 rebels inside the bombed-out camp in northern Lebanon, the report said.
The military said two Fatah al-Islam militants and two fighters of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine surrendered Monday.
The report said dozens of militants are known to have been killed in the fighting, but exact numbers aren't known.
