DENVER, July 16 (UPI) -- An armed man who shouted "I am the emperor" was shot to death by a Colorado state trooper Monday outside the governor's office at the state Capitol in Denver.
The unidentified gunman, dressed in a dark suit and dress shoes, entered a reception area of the governor's temporary office and waved a gun, the Rocky Mountain News reported. "I am the emperor," he shouted. "I am here to take over the government."
A staff member pushed a button to alert troopers and the man was ushered outside but was shot by Trooper Jay Hemphill after refusing to drop his weapon, the newspaper said.
Gov. Bill Ritter, whose regular office is being remodeled, was in the temporary office at the time but was not injured.
"I was in my office. I was interviewing a candidate for a state judgeship, when I heard what sounded like gunshots," Ritter said afterward.
Ritter remained in the Capitol building but most of his staff went home.
"I am foremost in my mind concerned about them," Ritter said of those who witnessed the shooting.
It was believed to be the first fatal shooting in the Capitol in Colorado history.
