Croatian killer hangs himself in jail

ZAGREB, Croatia, July 16 (UPI) -- A retired Croatian policeman, serving a 40-year term for killing his wife and two other women, hanged himself in a jail cell.

Vlastimir Kihalic, who never showed remorse for the deaths of three people he was convicted of slaying, killed himself Sunday in the Lepoglava prison, the Vecernji List daily reported Monday.

Kihalic was sentenced to the maximum punishment by a Croatian court for shooting his wife, who was asking for divorce in March 2005. Minutes later, Kihalic shot dead his wife's two female friends who were supporting her in aa divorce proceeding.

Prison guards prevented Kihalic from killing himself on two previous occasions in the Lepoglava jail, the newspaper said.
