British PM's party leads Tories

LONDON, July 15 (UPI) -- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labor Party holds a seven-point lead over David Cameron's Conservative Tories in a new poll.

The lead in the latest poll by The Sunday Telegraph is the largest since Cameron became leader of the opposition party in 2005.

The survey shows Labor with 40 percent, Conservatives with 33 percent and Liberal Democrats with 19 percent.

The lead is evidence of Brown's stronger-than-expected popularity with voters, the newspaper said.

If subsequent polls show Labor's lead holding over the summer, Brown could be tempted to call a parliamentary election for this autumn, the newspaper said.
