More charges for polygamist sect leader

COLORADO CITY, Ariz., July 13 (UPI) -- The state of Arizona has added eight felony counts to the list of charges against polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs.

An Arizona grand jury had already indicted Jeffs on four counts of incest and sexual conduct with a minor and he is also awaiting trial on similar charges in Utah, CNN said.

Each sexual conduct with a minor charge could lead to up to a year in prison, while the incest charges carry a penalty of up to 2 1/2 years in prison each.

Among his Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sect members Jeffs assigns multiple wives -- many of whom are allegedly underage -- to each man. As a result, Arizona authorities have indicted him as an accomplice.

Jeffs won't face trial in the state until his Utah charges are resolved, Arizona authorities said.

Though the sect branched off the mainline Mormon Church, Mormon officials have said they have no connection with Jeffs' religion.
