BAGHDAD, July 12 (UPI) -- Five Mehdi militiamen burying a roadside bomb in the Shia city of Diwaniya, Iraq, were killed in a U.S. air strike, TV and published reports said Thursday.
A spokesman for anti-American Shia cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr, has confirmed five of its fighters were "martyred."
Five civilians were also reportedly killed in the incident 112 miles south of Baghdad.
A U.S. military spokesman has, however, denied any civilian casualties were reported, said Alsumaria, Iraq's satellite TV network.
In other news, the U.S. Army has arrested 19 reputed al Qaida gunmen in strikes conducted in central and north Baghdad.
Among those apprehended was Khudeir Arshad Al Masoudi, accused of detonating two car bombs that killed at least 100 people last April.
U.S. soldiers also killed eight militants in Sadr City, a district in eastern Baghdad.
In a statement given to KUNA, the Kuwait news agency, the U.S. Army said it launched the Sadr City operation Monday after it received a tip from locals.
The militants were suspected of planting explosives and targeting Iraqi and American forces, the statement said.
In a separate incident, police are investigating the robbery of Baghdad's Dar Al-Salam Bank.
Three guards stole $282 million and fled to an unknown destination, KUNA said.
