JACKSON, Miss., July 12 (UPI) -- A Mississippi lawsuit alleges girls at a facility for juvenile offenders were shackled and pressed for sexual favors.
The Mississippi Youth Justice Project said at a news conference Thursday it filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of six teenage students at Columbia Training School. The suit names Gov. Haley Barbour and school administrators as defendants.
The alleged abuses came to light during an investigation by the Department of Human Services launched last month, after girls said they were shackled for 12 hours a day for weeks to prevent their escape from the facility, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reports.
During the investigation, allegations of school employees making sexual requests of students and offering them cigarettes surfaced.
Six of the school's staff members have been suspended without pay during the investigation.
