WELASCO, Texas, July 12 (UPI) -- A 21-year-old soldier -- AWOL from the U.S. Army -- has been arrested and charged with robbing a Texas convenience store while wearing his combat fatigues.
Police in Welasco, Texas, arrested Jose Davila after he used a screwdriver to threaten a Stripes clerk into handing over the cash in his till early Wednesday morning, The Monitor newspaper in Rio Grand Valley reported Thursday.
The quick-thinking cashier managed to scribble down the license plate number of the car in which Davila made his getaway.
Police used that information to locate Davila's mother, who provided officers with a photo of her son, which the clerk then identified as the alleged robber.
Davila, who was supposed to report to Fort Jackson in South Carolina a week ago, turned himself into police at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
He was charged with aggravated robbery, but will also likely face charges from the military for going AWOL, allegedly because of personal problems, a police spokesman said.
The Monitor was unable to reach Davila's family for a comment.
