TEL AVIV, Israel, July 12 (UPI) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert defended the country's decision to go to war last year with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
During a tour of the northern border Thursday, Olmert said the monthlong war has made Israelis safer by reducing the threat of attacks by Hezbollah and revealing holes in defenses, Haaretz reported.
However, some Olmert administration officials questioned how effectively those security gaps have been filled.
Goals like installing more alarms that identify missile launches and expanding civilian shelter space will require billions of dollars and more time, Raanan Dinur, director general of the prime minister's office, said at a Wednesday news conference.
Former Defense Minister Amir Peretz, however, told Israel radio the country is safer after the war.
