WASHINGTON, July 12 (UPI) -- The campaign of presidential hopeful U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is facing financial turbulence with just $2 million remaining in the bank.
McCain's primary campaign, which recently lost its campaign manager and chief strategist, is facing a number of financing options, each with its own significant hurdles, The Washington Post reported Thursday.
The campaign said it has been considering accepting public financing but that option could put McCain at a disadvantage compared with other front-runners. The system carries strict state-by-state limits that would likely keep McCain's funds significantly lower than those of other Republican competitors.
Meanwhile, a phone call made by McCain to top fundraisers from the Republican cloakroom of the Senate has raised ethics concerns, The New York Times reported. Senate rules forbid members from engaging in campaign activities inside Senate facilities. If McCain solicited funds during the call, it would also violate federal law.
