CHAPEL HILL, N.C., July 12 (UPI) -- The North Carolina presidential campaign headquarters of former U.S. Sen. John Edwards was emptied Thursday as investigators examined a suspicious package.
The Chapel Hill, N.C., office of Edwards, D-N.C., as evacuated "as a precaution," as the bomb squad arrived to determine whether the package was dangerous, CNN reported.
Campaign officials told CNN Thursday there was no known threat made against the presidential hopeful, who was in Detroit speaking at an NAACP forum at the time of the incident.
The Chapel Hill Police and the FBI are investigating but declined to offer details about the episode.
This is the third time this year the office has been evacuated because of suspicious packages; the other two incidents involved the arrival of letters containing mysterious white powder.
Those packages tested negative for dangerous materials.
