GAZA, July 12 (UPI) -- A 25-year-old Palestinian man became a double amputee after he was denied entry into Israel for medical treatment, Ynetnews reported Thursday.
Fatah member Ma'ala Uda was injured during recent clashes with Hamas in Gaza. However, he was told he would not be allowed to seek treatment to save his legs in Israel because he was a security risk.
As a result, both of Uda's limbs were amputated.
"With all due respect to the Shin Bet's work and concern for Israel's security, I fail to understand how a man who is missing one or two legs can jeopardize the country's security; it's simply ridiculous," said Ran Yaron of the Physicians for Human Rights organization.
"We told the court we would be willing to contract a security firm to escort patients from Gaza to the Allenby crossing so that they may receive treatment in Jordan, but the Shin Bet rejected this suggestion as well."
Other injured or ailing Palestinians have also been denied entrance into Israel for similar reasons, Ynetnews reported said.
The Shin Bet, also known as the Israel Security Agency, defended its decision, saying these particular Palestinian petitioners were linked to terror groups.
