WASHINGTON, July 12 (UPI) -- U.S. President Bush says Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates will meet with Arab allies to drum up support for the Iraq war.
The duo will travel to Arab states next month "to reassure our friends the Middle East remains a vital strategic priority to the United States," Bush told a White House news conference.
Bush told reporters pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq now would be dangerous -- not only to Iraqis, but also to Americans at home and other Middle Eastern countries.
He pointed to Iran's growing nuclear capabilities as well as active terror groups in Syria and Lebanon, which he said were assisting and training Iraqi insurgents to battle coalition troops.
"Leaving (Iraq) now would be dangerous," he said, warning of "mass killings" as well as the probability "American troops would have to return on a later date to fight an enemy that is far more dangerous."
"What happens overseas matters to the security of our country," he said.
