YORBA LINDA, Calif., July 11 (UPI) -- The new director of the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in California is promising a more balanced view of the late U.S. president.
The library, formed 17 years ago in Yorba Linda, Calif., by Nixon's friends and family, now is to be managed by the National Archives and Records Administration.
The new director, Tim Naftali, promises to present a nonpartisan view of Nixon, rather than the highly flattering image the library has presented of the president, who died in 1994 and is buried at the library, the Orange County (California) Register reported Wednesday.
Exhibits to be reworked include the telling of the Watergate break-in, which eventually led to Nixon's resignation as president.
The library will gain 78,000 pages of federal documents from Nixon's presidency and will change its name to the Richard Nixon Library and Museum, the Register said.
"If all goes as planned, the old Nixon library is basically going out of business," David Greenburg, author of "Nixon's Shadow: The History of an Image," told the Register. "This will be a major step toward historical accuracy."
