China protests FBI advertisements

BEIJING, July 10 (UPI) -- China has accused the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations of running negative advertisements against it relating to information gathering.

The accusation concerns what China claimed are advertisements run by the San Francisco FBI bureau in local Chinese language newspapers, asking readers to report any foreign power trying to gather information that could harm the United States, the official Xinhua reported.

Xinhua said the materials specifically mention China, implying the Chinese Ministry of State Security had infringed on U.S. security interests.

"The contents of the advertisements by the United States side are groundless, and China is indignant about them," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a news conference.

He was quoted as saying Chinese security departments had never tried to subvert foreign governments, infringe on their sovereignty or territorial integrity, or undermine their security interests.

He said some Americans are trapped in the Cold War ways of promoting the "China threat theory".

Qin urged the United States to take effective measures to repair the negative effect of the advertisements, Xinhua said.
