Key suspect in McCann abduction questioned

PORTIMAO, Portugal, July 10 (UPI) -- Police in Portugal Tuesday tried to clarify statements made by their key suspect in the abduction of 4-year-old Madeleine McCann.

Britain's Telegraph reported police in the Portuguese city of Portimao brought 33-year-old Robert Murat in for questioning Tuesday as authorities continued their search for the child who was abducted on May 3.

The British businessman is the key suspect in the girl's disappearance. He lived near the apartment from where she was abducted.

Yet police have admitted they have no evidence linking Murat to the girl's abduction and the former real estate agent has maintained his innocence.

Murat was arrested May 14 and police announced a day later he was a formal suspect in the abduction case.

Detectives told the Telegraph Murat was being questioned Tuesday in an attempt to clarify an earlier statement he made regarding McCann's disappearance.
