Officials in China break one-child law

BEIJING, July 9 (UPI) -- Authorities in the Chinese province of Hunan say almost 2,000 high ranking officials broke China's ban on having more than one child.

The Chinese government announced this year that fines for breaking the multiple child law were to be increased for the rich and powerful. The announcement angered many of China's elite, who are able to pay the financial penalties, the BBC reported.

The disclosure is fueling anger in China at the increasing privileges of a select few -- and is expected to heighten resentment against China's Communist Party, the BBC said.

Many of the one-child policy violations were revealed during corruption investigations.
