Man faces 19 counts of animal cruelty

NEW YORK, July 9 (UPI) -- A New York beautician has been charged with numerous counts of animal cruelty after 19 cocker spaniels and 200 pounds of their feces was found in his home.

Police said the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals received an anonymous tip about Daniel Freeman's abuse of the animals, the New York Post reported Monday.

The SPCA reportedly found 19 cocker spaniels, Lhasa apsos and miniature poodles living in the home with their own feces.

"The smell was just overwhelming," said SPCA official Roy Gross. "I can't believe people can live in these conditions."

SPCA workers and firefighters in protective gear worked to remove the dogs to the Southampton animal shelter where they were treated fro open sores and tooth decay, said the Post.

Freeman faces 19 counts of animal cruelty, which carries a maximum sentence of 19 years in prison and a $1,900 fine.
