SAN RAFAEL, Calif., July 8 (UPI) -- More than 240 goats were killed last week when the truck transporting them to a seminary overturned in California.
Local police said the Goats R Us-owned vehicle had likely been speeding at the time of the crash, prompting it to overturn and pin hundreds of the goats within the wreckage, the Marin (Calif.) Independent Journal said Saturday. The 32-foot-long trailer had been holding more than 400 goats at the time of Friday's crash in San Rafael.
The goats were being sent to the Golden State Theological Seminary to held clear brush and were valued at $150 each.
The Spanish goats were being transported inside tiered shelving units and it appeared those on top likely smothered those beneath them.
After the crash, Goats R Us owner Terri Oyarzun expressed regret at the inaction of company employees at the scene.
"Had I known what happened, I would have told them to open the doors and let them all free," she told the newspaper.
