WASHINGTON, July 8 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, the top Republican on the House intelligence panel, said Sunday he isn't sure Congress is ready to cut off funding for the war in Iraq.
"I think that it'll be very, very difficult for them to stop, for those who disagree with this to cut off funding for our troops in Iraq, but also to really damage the effort in this fight against radical jihadists," the Michigan congressman said on Fox News Sunday.
Hoekstra said al-Qaida wants to bring jihad from the Mideast, Asia and Africa into Europe and the United States.
"You know, this is more than a bumper sticker war. This is a real threat. We need to defeat al-Qaida where they are," he said.
Hoekstra said he thinks President George Bush will settle for less than Jeffersonian democracy in Iraq "and I think Congress would say we need to focus on security and stability."
He called for a national debate about whether the threat from radical jihadists is a threat to U.S. security over the long run. "And I'm not sure that we've come to a consensus on that," he said.
