OREM, Utah, July 7 (UPI) -- A 70-year-old Utah woman arrested for neglecting her bone-dry lawn says she suffered a bloody nose and sustained bruises from police handcuffs.
Betty Perry of Orem apparently answered her door when the officer knocked Friday, but then tried to go back inside the home and call her son while refusing to give her name.
Police reports say she tripped and fell during the struggle; however, the elderly woman claims police split her nose open when she was hit with handcuffs, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Saturday.
"As far as I'm concerned, he really abused me -- he brutally abused me," Perry told the Tribune.
The officer called for backup to take the woman to a holding facility where she alleges she was not given water or allowed to wash her hands or make her call to her son.
Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards said in a statement that after Perry was booked, supervisors became aware of the circumstances and immediately released her.
