Detroit zoo director to keep job

DETROIT, July 3 (UPI) -- The director of the Detroit Zoo is to be docked a month's pay and has been ordered to make a public apology for lying on his resume 15 years ago.

Ron Kagan, who now makes $200,000 a year, posted an apology on the zoo Web site late Monday, The Detroit News reported.

The board of the Detroit Zoological Society announced its decision Monday afternoon. The penalty includes a letter of reprimand in his personnel file.

Gail Warden, the board chairman, said most members believed Kagan was still the right person to serve as director. He described Kagan as an innovative leader able to make tough calls, such as moving the zoo's two elephants to California.

Board members received anonymous faxes several weeks ago that revealed Kagan did not have the doctorate in zoology he claimed. Kagan admitted he had lied, saying he did all the course work for his doctorate at Hebrew University in Israel but did not complete the thesis because of a problem with his adviser.
