Poll: Almost half in U.S. creationist

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 2 (UPI) -- The Brazilian government Monday pledged $1.7 billion to improve living conditions for slum dwellers in Rio de Janeiro.
The money will be used to improve sanitation and provide running water to residents of Rio's "favelas," or slums, O Globo TV reported Monday.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the effort would, in fact, help combat the rampant violence in the city's favelas, where a shootout between police and gang members claimed 19 lives last week.
