LONDON, July 2 (UPI) -- An 88-year-old British man, who rarely left his home near London, has left more than $6 million to the Tate Gallery.
Nicholas Augustus Themans, who died in January, also left more than $100,000 to The Rationalist Society, an anti-religious campaign led by Jonathan Miller, the BBC reported Monday.
One of the man's neighbors, Andrew Payne, who writes the "Midsomer Murders" series for ITV, was surprised at the small fortune Themans left to the Tate.
"He seemed a nice bloke but hardly spoke to anyone. When he went out he kept his head down so you couldn't engage him in conversation," Payne told the BBC of Themans. "The fact that he left all this money is quite incredible. He looked like he didn't have two beans to rub together."
