China eyeing new holiday system

BEIJING, July 1 (UPI) -- Chinese officials are considering doing away with the nation's current "golden week" holiday system in favor of a more traditional set of holidays.

China's official Xinhua news agency said Sunday the Asian nation may soon shorten the May Day holiday from one week to only a single day and limit its National Day celebration to two days.

The "golden week" system includes three-day holiday celebrations for the Chinese Spring Festival, National Day and Labor Day.

Zhang Hui, Beijing International Studies University's tourism department dean, said Chinese officials have proposed implementing three more traditional public holidays to replace the missing celebratory days.

"Experts all agree that Mid-Autumn Day should be set as a public holiday and the government can choose two more from the Lantern Festival, the Tomb-Sweeping Day, the Dragon-Boat Festival and Double Nine Day," Zhang said.

Zhang told Xinhua that employees nationwide would be given paid vacations for those days if a related measure is written into the nation's labor law.
