GAZA, July 1 (UPI) -- Kidnapped BBC reporter Alan Johnston may be in further peril, Gaza sources said, after the recent arrest of two militants from the region's Dogmas clan.
While Hamas security forces arrested the two militants with plans of using the prisoners to force the Mumtaz Dogmas-led group into releasing Johnston, sources said the move has simply placed the journalist in further jeopardy, The Observer reported Sunday.
Johnston has been in custody 111 days as of Sunday, allegedly being held by a radical splinter group of the clan.
Last Monday, a video showing Johnston wearing a possible explosives vest was released by the Jaish al-Islam group.
Hamas police commander Abu Khalid said the militants' arrest last Friday apparently backfired as the militant group immediately threatened reprisals throughout Gaza.
"There was an operation ... to arrest two members of Jaish al-Islam to put pressure on the Dogmas family," Khalid said. "The response to this was that Mumtaz threatened all foreigners and journalists in Gaza."
