MALMO, Sweden, June 30 (UPI) -- A Swedish appeals court has upheld the conviction and prison sentence in the case of a woman who did not let her husband know she was HIV positive.

The woman was diagnosed in 1987 when she was 19. A few years later, when she met the man she eventually married, she did not tell him of her status, The Local reported. The couple have two children.

The Malmo Court of Appeal Friday agreed with a lower court in Helsingborg that she is guilty of a serious attempted assault. She has been sentenced to 2 ½ years in prison.

Neither her husband nor their children have been infected. When she was diagnosed, AIDS appeared to be a death sentence, but she is now being treated successfully with drugs.
