Arrests in SUV attack on Scotland airport

GLASGOW, Scotland, June 30 (UPI) -- Police in Scotland arrested two men Saturday who drove a flaming Jeep Cherokee into the main terminal at Glasgow Airport.

One was hospitalized with severe burns, The Scotsman reported. The Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley was partly evacuated after a suspected explosive device was found on his body.

Britain went on its highest terrorist alert after the incident, which officials said was linked to two failed car-bomb attacks in London Friday. Glasgow Airport was closed immediately and stricter security measures were instituted at other airports, including limited access by private cars.

Lynsey McBean of Erskine was close to the Jeep at the time and watched as a plastic barrier stopped it just outside the entrance.

"One of the men, I think it was the driver, brought out a plastic canister and poured it under the car," she said. "He then set light to it. At that point, a policeman came over, the passenger got out of the car and punched him."

While Strathclyde Police Constable Willie Rae linked the airport attack to the unsuccessful car bombings in London a day earlier, The Scotsman reported that sources inside the police said it appeared to be more of a copycat attack, not the work of an al-Qaida operative.
