U.N.: North Korea cooperative

PYONGYANG, North Korea, June 29 (UPI) -- A U.N. official said Friday North Korea has been very cooperative with a U.N. delegation visiting to discuss the shutdown of its nuclear program.

Olli Heinonen, deputy director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency said told reporters the delegation saw all they wanted to see at the Yongbyon nuclear reactor, the Kyodo news agency reported.

''We went to the fuel fabrication plant, the radiochemical laboratory or reprocessing plant as it's called, then the 50-megawatt reactor which is under construction and then the 5 MW reactor. So all the places which we wanted to see, we saw,'' Heinonen said.

''They are operating. It's not yet the point of shutdown, so that is still to come,'' he said.

North Korea agreed in February to shut down its nuclear facilities. Negotiators have said they expect a shutdown date to be announced soon.

The IAEA visit was the first to North Korea since December 2002 when North Korea expelled the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency.
