KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine, June 29 (UPI) -- U.S. plans for a European missile defense system are likely to top the agenda when Russian President Vladimir Putin visits U.S. President George Bush in Maine.
Russia is strongly opposed to the plan for facilities in Poland and the Czech Republic.
Experts told the Christian Science Monitor that they don't expect the two presidents to make great progress on the issue beyond agreeing to discuss it more when they meet at the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, for two days starting Monday.
"I really don't think that either of them wants, as part of their legacy, a trashed U.S.-Russian relationship," Andrew C. Kuchins, Russia and Eurasia program director for the Center for Strategic and International Studies said at a recent seminar.
Putin isn't the first world leader to visit the Bush compound in Maine. Former British Prime Minister John Major and former French Prime Minister Francois Mitterrand were among those visiting Bush's father at the compound during his presidency.
