WASHINGTON, June 28 (UPI) -- A new poll suggests Hispanic voters in the United States are largely turning away from the Republican Party in favor of the Democrats.
A USA Today/Gallup poll found that 11 percent of U.S. Hispanic respondents identified themselves as Republicans, down from 19 percent in 2005, compared to 42 percent who identified themselves as Democrats, up from 33 percent in 2005, USA Today reported Thursday.
Additionally, when independents who lean towards a specific party are added into the mix, the totals reach 58 percent for Democrats and 20 percent for Republicans.
The poll also found that of the Hispanics who identified themselves as Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents, 59 percent support Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., over her rivals for the Democratic presidential nod. USA Today said Clinton's support among Hispanics could give her an advantage in the early primary states of Nevada, Florida, California and other locations with large numbers of Hispanic voters.
