LA sues hospitals for dumping homeless

LOS ANGELES, June 27 (UPI) -- Los Angeles prosecutors have filed complaints against two hospitals and a transportation company for dumping homeless patients on skid row.

In one case, a paraplegic man was found crawling in a gutter, the Los Angeles Times said Wednesday.

Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and Methodist Hospital are accused in four separate incidents of alleged patient dumping over a 14-month period. Empire Enterprises, whose van driver allegedly left the paraplegic man, has been named as a co-conspirator.

The complaints allege all four patients were dumped "without any plan for appropriate medical care and other necessary ancillary services" to allow the hospitals to rid themselves of the trouble and expense of caring for them.

The newspaper said City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo is trying to use a state law concerning unfair business practices, which allows a corporation to be sued for unscrupulous behavior, to act against the hospitals.
