Oklahoma rain breaks records

OKLAHOMA CITY, June 27 (UPI) -- Heavy rain in Oklahoma flooded homes, roads and washed away a 70-year record Wednesday.

Wednesday was the 15th consecutive day of rain in Oklahoma City, breaking a record set in June 1937, forecasters told the Oklahoman.

Many roads were closed or flooded by the heavy rains and flash floods.

"It's the worst I've ever seen it," Don Lynch, Shawnee Emergency Management director told the Oklahoman newspaper. "It's almost chaotic with the rain coming down faster than we can get roadblocks out."

Rescue workers helped stranded motorists, including 16-year-old twins whose car stalled at a flooded intersection in Oklahoma City.

"We were panicking. We were freaking out," Lindsey Penn told the newspaper after firefighters used a boat to pull the girls from their flooded car. "We were really scared."
