SAN FRANCISCO, June 25 (UPI) -- California's Republican Party is drawing criticism from its own members for handing out some top jobs to non-U.S. citizens.
News the party hired an Australian and a Canadian has led to anger at a time when the GOP is split over immigration reform sought by President Bush, The New York Sun reported Monday.
Last March the California GOP chose Australian Michael Kamburowski to be its chief operating officer and recently gave the post of research and political technology director to Canadian Christopher Matthews.
Kamburowski, resigned Sunday as chief operating officer in the wake of concern about a $41 million lawsuit he has filed against the Department of Homeland Security.
Karen Hanretty, a former spokeswoman for the state party, has called the hiring decisions unfathomable.
"It's insulting but also embarrassing ... to bring people from the outside who don't know the difference between Lodi and Lancaster ... and who can't even vote," she told the San Francisco Chronicle.
