Alaskan wildfire burns 80 dwellings

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, June 25 (UPI) -- A 52,000-acre wildfire in the Alaskan Caribou Hills destroyed at least 80 cabins and houses, an official said.

Mary Huels, an information officer at the fire headquarters for the Kanai Peninsula fire, said the number could grow, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

"They're continuing to inventory the area and they're still not finished," Huels said Sunday.

Hundreds of firefighters battled Caribou Hills fire and a 9,400-acre wildfire near Trapper Lake.

Unauthorized flights over both fire areas were restricted as residents with access to small planes began flying over the area to see the damage, the Daily News reported. Officials said the planes could interfere with firefighting aircraft.
