Kissinger: U.S. and China key to peace

NANJING, China, June 24 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger says relations between the United States and China are vital to world peace efforts.

Speaking in China's Jiangsu Province, Kissinger said world peace and development would only be possible if China and the United States have a positive relationship, China's official Xinhua news agency reported Sunday.

By creating a strong bilateral relationship, Kissinger added, the two nations would be able to introduce significant opportunities throughout the world.

Kissinger's comments came during Saturday's 20th anniversary celebration for Nanjing University and Johns Hopkins University's Center for Chinese and American Studies.

While China and the United States may possess different world views, creating mutual benefits must be the focus of future negotiations, he said.

Kissinger said this could be done by not extolling pressure on one another in the political arena, Xinhua reported.
