CHICAGO, June 24 (UPI) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson was arrested outside a Chicago area gun store after a protest against weapons.
Jackson and the Rev. Michael Pfleger, a Roman Catholic priest, were arrested Saturday for trespassing outside Chuck's Gun Shop in suburban Riverdale, Ill., police said.
Gun sales are banned in Chicago, but Jackson said suburban stores, such as Chuck's, offer easy access to guns, the Chicago Tribune reported. "The suburbs have surrounded the city with these gun shops," Jackson said.
Three buses packed with anti-gun activists joined Jackson and Pfleger, while about 30 pro-gun activists filled the store, where rows of handguns and rifles occupy display cases.
Jackson and Pfleger were arrested after a confrontation in front of the store in which one or the other bumped against or pushed a pro-gun activist, police said.
"I think he's grandstanding," gun customer David Lawson said of Jackson. "There was no reason for him to get arrested. It's just a useless gesture."
