BAGHDAD, June 24 (UPI) -- The former aide to the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, known as "Chemical Ali," was sentenced Sunday to death by hanging in Iraq.

Ali Hassan al-Majid and two other former aides to Hussein were sentenced by an Iraqi court to hang for their roles in a 1980s genocide campaign that killed up to 100,000 Kurds, CNN reported.

Al-Majid, Hussein's first cousin, earned his nickname for the poisonous gas and chemicals used against the Kurds.

Also sentenced to death Sunday were Sultan Hashem Ahmed and Hussein Rashid Mohammed, both former military commanders convicted of partcipating in the genocide against the Kurds.

Saddam was a defendant in the same trial, but was hanged last year after being convicted of 1892 killings in the Shiite town of Dujail.

He was ousted from power after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
