Cause of theme park accident unknown

LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 23 (UPI) -- Kentucky state inspectors have found no history of problems with the theme park ride where a girl's feet were severed by a loose cable.

Bill Clary, an office of consumer and environmental protection spokesman, said the inspection team was trying to determine why the cable on the Superman Tower of Power at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom broke, The (Louisville) Courier-Journal reported.

"It looks like a cable caused the injury, but we have no idea what caused the accident," he said.

The ride was shut down immediately after the accident Thursday. At least eight parks across the United States and one in Stockholm, Sweden, have closed similar rides until the investigation is completed.

Under Kentucky law, state inspectors must check amusement park rides at least once a year. A Six Flags spokeswoman said technicians at the park examine every ride before Kentucky Kingdom opens to the public for the day.

The Stockholm theme park Grona Lund closed its popular 'Fritt Fall,' which is identical to the Kentucky ride, The Local reported Saturday.

"We need to know what caused this. We will not operate until we know," Grona Lund's Peter Osbeck was quoted as saying in Aftonbladet.
