LISBON, Portugal, June 22 (UPI) -- Portuguese lawmakers have legalized abortion up until the 10th week of pregnancy, with a three-day waiting period before an abortion can be performed.

The law is set to take effect by mid-July, Diario de Noticias reported Friday.

In a national referendum earlier this year, almost 60 percent of voters in the staunchly Catholic country said they were in favor of legalizing abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.
