Brazilian tribes bury babies alive

BRASILIA, Brazil, June 22 (UPI) -- Some Brazilian Amazon tribes bury alive newborn babies who have physical defects or are twins or triplets, considering them soulless or cursed.

Activists who are trying to stop the practice say tribal infanticide claims dozens of babies' lives every year, Britain's Telegraph newspaper reported Friday.

Not all children killed are buried, however. Some are smothered with leaves, poisoned or left alone in the jungle to die.

Dr. Marcos Pellegrini, who works in the Yanomami Tribe Health Care District, said mothers killed 98 children in 2004.
