Former Thai PM must return to face charges

BANGKOK, June 20 (UPI) -- Deposed Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been ordered to return to the Asian nation to face charges in an assets concealment case.

The Bangkok Post said Wednesday that the order from the Department of Special Investigation also includes his wife Potjaman, his sister-in-law Bussaba Damapong and an SC Asset representative.

A DSI official said last Friday's summons orders the four to return to Thailand by June 29 to properly explain their financial dealings for the department's investigation.

"Those who have been accused can defend themselves. And if they have sufficient reasons to counter the charges, the DSI will not indict them," said DSI official Sunai Manomai-udom said.

The summons was issued after the former prime minister and the others were linked to unreported shares in SC Asset.

Thaksin and his wife are facing a maximum of two years in prison for concealing assets, the Post said, while SC Asset and Bussaba are facing up to five years each.
