Wildfire spreads near Colo. resort

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo., June 19 (UPI) -- Hundreds of firefighters battled a wildfire Tuesday near the Colorado mountain resort of Glenwood Springs.

The fire, which began with a lightning strike Sunday night, had expanded to 800 acres and was only 15 percent contained, the Post Independent in Glenwood Springs reported.

Residents of about 30 houses were evacuated Monday.

Firefighters from Wyoming and federal hot-shot crews battled to contain the flames. The federal government also supplied two large air tankers and one smaller one to drop retardant.

Glenwood Springs Fire Chief Mike Piper said the rough ground made bringing in bulldozers to create fire lines impossible.

Down the Colorado River valley, the Whitaker Flats fire burned in a remote area on the west side of the river about 11 miles east of Grand Junction, the Grand Junction Free Press reported.
