Nicaraguan president meets with Castro

HAVANA, June 18 (UPI) -- Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega met with Fidel Castro over the weekend, becoming the latest leftist leader to meet with the ailing Cuban president.

The leaders reportedly discussed Nicaragua's energy recent energy shortages, including blackouts and improving literacy in the Central American country, The Miami Herald reported Monday.

Ortega's visit was proceeded by that of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, Castro's closest confidant in the region.

The health of 80-year-old Castro is reportedly improving, according to Chavez, who said the Cuban leader could soon be ready to resume his responsibilities as the leader of the Communist island nation.
