U.S. Air Force jets collide while training

FAIRBANKS, Alaska, June 12 (UPI) -- No injuries were reported after two Air Force jets collided in flight during a training exercise at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska.

One of the pilots was able to land his aircraft at Eielson after the collision Monday and the other pilot ejected from his plane before it crashed in a rural area about 90 miles east of the base, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported Tuesday.

Airman Justin Weaver with the 354th Fighter Wing Public Affairs office said the pilot who ejected was rescued uninjured about an hour after the crash and was being evaluated by medical personnel at the base.

The jets collided while participating in the Red Flag Alaska joint training exercise with the Air Force and other military units, the newspaper said. The plane that was able to land was an F-16 jet assigned with its pilot to the 64th Aggressor Squadron from Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and the jet that crashed was an F-15 from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

Weaver told the News-Miner a board of Air Force officers have been assigned to investigate the incident.
