High-tech bomb found in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, June 11 (UPI) -- Afghan police and government officials say a high-tech bomb similar to those used by Iraqi militant groups has been found in Kabul.

Intelligence sources in the country said the bomb was discovered next to a road where it is believed to have targeted a high-level government convoy, the BBC reported Monday. The device is designed to pierce heavily armored vehicles.

Afghan police and government officials said they believe the so-called shaped charges, which are designed to focus their explosions on a single point, are being obtained by militant groups from Iran. They said Iran's security agencies are known to supply the Taliban insurgency with money, weapons and explosives.

The Iranian ambassador to Kabul denied his country had any involvement in the bomb in Afghanistan.
