Explosion rocks downtown Nairobi

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 11 (UPI) -- Kenyan authorities are investigating the cause of an explosion Monday in downtown Nairobi that killed at least one person and injured dozens of others.

The blast occurred at a restaurant near the Ambassadeur Hotel in central Nairobi in a busy area that serves as a bus terminus, The Capital News reports.

According to witnesses, a man believed to be responsible for the explosion got off a bus just before the blast occurred.

"We saw someone attempting to enter Ambassadeur," a witness said. "Soon after we heard the blast."

One man died at the scene and some 30 injured were taken to Kenyatta National Hospital.

Kenya has stepped up security since terror groups began fleeing Somalia in January.

In August 1998, 200 people were killed when a terrorist bomb exploded at the U.S Embassy in Nairobi.
