U.N. considers role in N. Korea nuke talks

SEOUL, June 7 (UPI) -- An internal United Nations report urges U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to get involved in six-nation nuclear talks with North Korea.

The report, written by the U.N. Department of Political Affairs, urges proactive measures to boost U.N. activities on the Korean Peninsula, the newspaper Chosun Ilbo said Thursday.

The newspaper said the report outlines options including direct political dialogue with North Korea and Ban's participation in the nuclear talks as a negotiator or an observer.

Ban is expected to appoint a U.N. envoy in charge of Korean Peninsula affairs to coordinate efforts, the newspaper said.
