Bolivian leader meets Cuban counterpart

HAVANA, June 8 (UPI) -- Bolivian President Evo Morales met with Cuban interim leader Raul Castro in Havana during his announced visit to the communist island.

The leftist Morales -- Bolivia's first indigenous elected leader -- also met with Cuba's foreign minister and vice president, Granma newspaper reported Friday.

It was uncertain whether Morales also met with Fidel Castro, who in recent days has been keeping a more public profile than at any time during his nearly yearlong illness.

The 80-year-old Fidel Castro leader turned over authority to his younger brother, Raul, last July, after announcing he was suffering from an unspecified gastrointestinal illness that required surgery.

Following his decision to step down -- albeit temporarily -- U.S. officials publicly speculated Castro was suffering from cancer and had only months to live.

However, Cuban officials assert Castro is recovering and taking on more leadership responsibilities.
